Custom return path
Choose the subdomain usend uses for bounces and SPF.
The return path (envelope sender, or MAIL FROM) is the hidden address where bounces are delivered. It is also the domain SPF is checked against. usend uses a subdomain of your domain for it, so SPF aligns with your domain for DMARC.
By default the return-path label is send, and the CNAME you publish on usend.et is:
| Name | Type | Value |
|---|---|---|
send-ses | CNAME | rp-ses-us-east-1.usend.et |
The -ses suffix marks the record used for sending through Amazon SES.
Choose another label
Pick another label if send-ses is already in use on your domain, or if you prefer a different name. Set custom_return_path when you add the domain:
curl -X POST https://api.usend.et/domains \
-H "Authorization: Bearer us_123456789" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{ "name": "acme.com", "custom_return_path": "bounces" }'With bounces, the record to publish becomes bounces-ses CNAME rp-ses-us-east-1.usend.et. The domain's records always show the exact name to use.
The label must be a single DNS label: lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, at most 59 characters, not starting or ending with a hyphen. When omitted or empty, send is used.
Change it later
Update an existing domain with PATCH /domains/{id}:
curl -X PATCH https://api.usend.et/domains/d91cd9bd-1176-453e-8fc1-35364d380206 \
-H "Authorization: Bearer us_123456789" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{ "custom_return_path": "bounces" }'Changing the label resets the domain to pending, and you cannot send from it until the new CNAME verifies. Publish the new record before changing the label to keep the interruption short.
