Yahoo and the spam folder
What to check when your usend email lands in Yahoo or AOL spam.
Yahoo and AOL share one filtering system and have been strict with bulk senders since early 2024. Complaints from Yahoo users are the signal that matters most.
Requirements
For bulk senders Yahoo expects:
- SPF and DKIM that pass and align with your From domain: see Verify a domain.
- A DMARC record.
- Easy, one-click unsubscribe on marketing mail: Unsubscribe links.
- A spam complaint rate below 0.3%, and ideally under 0.1%.
Yahoo also looks for valid reverse DNS and TLS on the sending servers. On the platform's IPs that is maintained by usend.
What helps
- Send what people expect. Yahoo users flag mail they forgot subscribing to. Say who you are in the first lines and use a recognizable From name.
- Use confirmed opt-in. See Email consent.
- Prune. Yahoo recycles inactive addresses into spam traps. Stop mailing addresses that never engage: Audience hygiene.
- Ramp up. Yahoo throttles new senders with temporary
421or4.7.0responses. usend retries those automatically; adelivery_delayedevent is not a failure. Keep volumes modest until they clear: Warm up a domain.
Feedback loop
When a provider reports a complaint, usend records an email.complained event and suppresses the address. See Bounces and suppressions. Watch your complaint rate in the dashboard; a rise right after a campaign tells you the list or the content is the problem.
For recipients
Ask them to move your message out of spam with Not spam, and to add you to their contacts.
